Stopping Distance&Work Done Flashcards
What is the reaction time?
The reaction time is the time between the driver spotting a hazard and taking action
What two main factors affect the thinking distance?
1) how fast you are going (the faster you go the further you’ll go)
2) how dopey you are (tiredness, drugs, alcohol, careless attitude)
Other than how fast you are going and how dopey you are what other facts contribute to thinking distance ?
Bad visibility- rain, bright incoming lights ,
Distractions- radio
What four main factors affect the braking distance?
1) how fast you are going
2) how good your brakes are
3) how good the tires are
4) how good the grip is
How can you minimise the threat of tires having a bad impact on the braking distance?
Tires should have a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm in order to be able to get rid of the water in better conditions.
What three things depend on how good the grip is?
1) road surface
2) weather conditions
3) tyres
What is work done?
When a force moves an object through a distance, energy is transferred and work is done.
What is the equation for work done
Work done= force X distance
What is meant by thinking distance as part of the total stopping distance of a car?
The distance travelled in the time between a hazard appearing and the driver breaking
What must be added to thinking distance to find the total stopping distance of a car?
The braking distance
Why can work done be measured in the same units as energy?
Because work done is a Measure of energy transfer
What two factors affect your total stopping distance?
1) thinking distance
2) braking distance
