Copper coil and stopping contraception
If inserted over 40 it can stay in until menopause or until contraception is no longer required
Non hormonal methods and when to stop contraception
After 1 yr amenorrhoea if > 50
After 2 yrs amenorrhoea if
POP/ Mirena and stopping > 40
FSH should be done in women >50 using prog only pill
FSH not reliable if on COC
If FSH > 30 repeat after 6/52. If second FSH > 30 contraception can be stopped after 1 yr
OR
Stop 55 yrs in any case
Mirena inserted > 45 can stay in for 7 years or until menopause.
If not amenorrhoeic consider investigating and then continue contraception beyond 55 until amenorrhoeic for 1 yr
COC and stopping > 40
Stop age 50 and switch to non hormonal or progesterone only. Then stop when 55 if amenorrhoeic or > 1 year of amenorrhoea
DMPA and stopping > 40
Stop at 50 and choose :
- non hormonal and stop after 2 years of amenorrhoea
- switch to POP/ Mirena / implant and follow advice
COC and stopping > 40
Stop age 50 and switch to non hormonal or progesterone only. Then stop when 55 if amenorrhoeic or > 1 year of amenorrhoea
DMPA and stopping > 40
Stop at 50 and choose :
- non hormonal and stop after 2 years of amenorrhoea
- switch to POP/ Mirena / implant and follow advice
