What are the six groups of classifications for building stones?
Granite
Limestone
Quartz-Based
Slate
Marble
Other
What are the properties of granite building stone group?
Igneous
Non-porous
Strong
Durable
This building stone group is suitable for exposure to severe weather and ground contact:
Granite
What are the properties of limestone building stone group?
Sedimentary
Strength & porosity vary with density
Color: White to gray to red
Has textured finish
Are quartz-based stones sedimentary or igenous?
Sedimentary
What are some examples of quartz-based stones?
Sandstone
Brownstone
What are the properties of slate building stone group?
Metamorphic
Derived from mineral clays
Dense
nonabsorbent
color varies
What are the properties of Marble building stone group?
Metamorphic
color and properties vary
easily polished
What are the steps to quarrying?
- Long-bladed saw makes deep, long cuts into rock
- Holes are drilled into the horizontal face of rock (to create a plane of weakness)
- Rubber bladders are inserted and inflated into those cuts, causing slabs to fall away from solid rock
- Steel wedges are driven into slabs, making smaller blocks
- Blocks are shipped to mills
Stone masonry definition?
Stone laid on mortar
What is the difference between rubble stone masonry and ashlar stone masonry?
Rubble: Natural organic
Ashlar: Dimensional
What is a stone cladding?
Stone masonry that is used for visual purposes, fastened to a structural frame or wall
What is the difference between random and coursed rubble masonry?
Random: Laid w/out horizontal joints
Coursed: Laid w/ horizontal joints
Definition of concrete:
Composite material made of aggregates and cement paste
Definition of cement:
Powdery substance made with calcined lime and clay
