Stratified squamous epithelium reacts to excessive acidic exposure by becoming para- or hyperkeratotic->sloughing off layers predisposes to secondary infection w/ opportunistic bacteria and inflammatory cells migrate to the region->the lesion deepens and progresses from an erosion to ulceration, exposing unprotected tissue to acid contents->subsequent may or may not occur
