Stockforms, components, additives Flashcards
What are additives
Chemical substances that improve polymer’s mechanical properties
What does a plasticiser do?
It improves their flow properties for moulding. Makes it more FLEXIBLE.
examples for industry usage are medical tubing, clingfilm, hosepipes
what does a pigment do?
Adds colour and put during during manufacture
What does an anti-bacterial agent do?
gives it anti bacterial properties
used in chopping boards
What does a foaming agent do
causes bubbles to form
- insulation, swimming noodles
What does an antistatic agent do
reduces static charges so used in electric device manufacture
what does an bittering agent do
makes it bitter so people dont ingest it.
Other are fire-retardant, fragrance, antioxidant agents.
reduce burning and add smell and prevent oxidation
Why might manufactures use filler additives
Powdered solids that bulk up polymers and reduce cost. Also addd strength and increase impact resistance.
What are common stock form
Sheet– line bending
tubes- comes in multiple cross section shapes
Granules– used for injection moulding
Rod– used for cnc machining
Foam
Powder– used for coating on surfaces
reels-plastic wire used in certain 3d printers
describe Standard components for polymers
> > Nuts and bolts
washers - secure fitting
wall plugs–provide nachors for screw in walls
end caps to hide the screw heads close piping/tubing
gear wheels
