STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection)
a virus, bacteria, fungus, or parasite people can get through sexual contact
STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease)
infectious diseases spread from person to person through sexual contact
Epidemic
occurrence of diseases in which many people in the same place at the same time are affected
Curable
comes from bacteria- needs antibiotic
-ex. Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis
Incurable
Cannot be treated
ex. HPV, genital warts, genital herpes, trichomoniasis
Transmission is through:
Unprotect sex
sharing needles
birthing a baby
Absitenence
decision to avoid harmful behaviors (sex, drugs, alcohol)
HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
-virus that can cause genital warts/ cervical cancer
-not curable
Genital Warts
-1-3 months after HPV
-found in genitals/ anus
-not curable bc is a virus
Chlamydia
-bacterial infection that infects reproductive organs
-15-19 yrs old (most popular age group)
-found on genitals, anus, mouth
-be treated w/ antibiotics
-can lead to infertility
Genital Herpes
2 Types: Cause cold sores or cause genital sores
-20% of teens infected
-not curable
Gonorrhea
bacterial STD that affects mucous membranes
-can be treated
-can lead to infertility if untreated
Trichomoniasis
Caused by microscopic protozoan that results in infection of the vagina, urethra, & bladder
Syphilis
caused by a SPIROCHETE
-sores, blisters on genitals, anus, mouth
-if untreated can spread to internal organs
