Trichomoniasis
Vaginal yeast infection
yellow to green frothy malodorous discharge
Treated with metronidazolle
Chlamydia
Common cause of Pelvic inflammatory disease
causes eye infection in neonates exposed
Treatment is doxycycline or azithromycin
HIV-AIDS
causes severe depression of immune system
symptoms will appear 6-12 weeks after exposure and will be flu like( fever, chills, malaise, body aches)
Neonatal transfer can be interrrupted with proper antiviral treatment
Hepatitis B
Found in blood, semen, tears, saliva and sweat
Can be prevented with vaccination
Leads to destruction of liver
Neonates that are exposed are bathed then treated with immunoglobulin and hep b vaccine
Herpes Simplex 2
Painful reoccurent ulcers
can cause deafness in neonates that are exposed
Treatment is acyclovir(antiviral) but is not curable
Gonorrhea
Green to yellow discharge
May lead to blindness in infected neonates
Antibiotic ointment is placed in infants eyes at birth
Human Papilloma Virus(HPV)
Genital warts
Causes severe vaginal itching in clusters
Can be prevented with vaccination but no cure
Wear loss clothing and oatmeal bath
Risk factor for cervical cancer
Syphillis
Complex disease that leads to systemic infection
1 stage- painless chancre at site of infection
2 stage- 6 weeks to 6 months later patient will develop rash on palms and soles
3 stage- infection enters latent period where 1/3 experience organ system involvement
Treatment is Penicillin G
