Stimulus location Flashcards
What are some examples of object localisation?
Orienting Reflex
Smooth pursuit
Motion anticipation
Saccadic movements during object inspection
What is the function of the superior colliculus?
Regulation of saccadic movements
Where does superior colliculus receive information from?
Ganglion cells, Auditory system, Somatosensory system
What does Retinoptic map mean?
Organisation whereby neighbouring cells in retina feed information to neighbouring places in target structures
What areas of the brain are involved in orientation?
Tectum, Pretectum, Hindbrain motor neurones
What is the dorsal stream responsible for?
Stimulus location
Dorsal stream pathway
M-ganglion cell -> lateral geniculate nucleus magno cell -> V1 -> V2 -> V3 -> MT -> Parietal
How does direction selectivity work
ON/OFF cells
Respond to movement in some directions but not others
Receives excitation from bipolar cells and inhibition from amacrine cells
More excitation in preferred direction
Morphology of direction selective cells
Highly asymmetric - preferred direction can be guessed from the morphology
