Body language, clothing and gestures
What postures and expressions do the people in the artwork have? How are they significant? How does their costume describe them and contribute to the meaning of the artwork?
Colour
These have cultural meanings attached and can be used to build atmosphere and convey tone.
Light
Shade and shadow can add mystery. Brightness can attract the viewer’s attention to a particular focus.
Location
Where is the artwork positioned? How does this affect the meaning of the artwork?
Media
What is the artwork made from? What surface is it on? What materials have been used to create it? Are there any other elements incorporated into it to create meaning?
Objects
What do the elements of the picture symbolise?
Subject positioning
How are the elements of the picture positioned in relation to each other? Are some things in front and some things behind? Are some things bigger and some smaller? Are some higher and some lower? What effect do these things have on the meaning of the artwork?
Viewer positioning
Is the person looking at the artwork made to feel as though they are a part of the image? Does it interact with the viewer? From what angle does the viewer see the artwork? How is the viewer made to feel about the subject?
