Economics drive change.
Things in life change when money is involved. The desire for money can make people “do” things.
Every action or event has a reaction or consequence.
Everything has a consequence to it. Every decision will cause a “ripple” effect. Consequences can be either positive or negative.
Geography shapes culture.
People’s lives are effected by where they live. Culture is a set of beliefs, values, and practices that a group has in common.
History repeats.
The story of human life has repetitive themes. There are patterns, cycles, and threads throughout human life.
Mankind is universal.
All human beings need, want, and feel the same things. Basic needs must be met for people to survive - water, food, shelter.
Perspective defines historical interpretation.
Humans will abuse their power if nothing exists to “check” them. Once people achieve a position of power, most take advantage.
Archaeology
The study of the past based on what people left behind.
Fossil
A part of an imprint of something that was once alive.
Artifacts
Objects created by and used by humans.
Geography
The study of the earth’s physical and cultural features.
Climate
The pattern of weather conditions in a certain area over a long period of time.
Why do we study history, or the past?
To help us better understand ourselves, others, and our world.
Environment
All living and non-living things that affect life in an area.
What is the goal of a historian?
To understand the cultures of the past.

Animals, water, wood/lumber, plants
What is the importance of natural resources to early settlements?
People lived where these were plentiful.

The natural features of the lands’ surface
Region
An area with one or more features that make it different from surrounding areas.
Resources
Materials found in the earth that people need and value.
Agriculture
The development of farming from the domestication of plants.
