he was a micro-sociologist who looked into everyday situations like face to face interactions
what was goffmans concept
he suggested that we were all actors and we perform different roles. there is front stage and back stage e.e. how we present ourself in different was depending on the situation
what was Goffmans book called

what is a stigma
an attribute that is deeply discrediting, which “reduces a person in our minds from a whole and usual person to a tainted, discounted one” (Goffman, 1963, p3)
what are the 3 types of stigma
abominations of the body, blemishes of charecter, tribal
what is a courtesy stigma
experiencing a stigma on behalf of someone else e.g. children with LGBTQ+ parents
when is a stigma discredited
When a stigma is known about/obvious to others
when is a stigma discreditable
When stigma is not immediately discredited, if discreditable, Goffman says you will mange the information you give out, resulting in hypervigilance
what are the 4 Strategies of dealing with stigma
passing, disclosing, covering, resisting
what is passing
hiding the disability, e.g. lying about the situation
what is disclosing
telling people about it in order to out yourself. e.g. #metoo
what is covering
also known as normalising, changing your name , accent, style of makeup in order to fit in
what is resisting
refusing to be sterotyped, done with a sense of pride an advocation
