What is Steven-Johnson Syndrome?
A specific type of allergic reaction, which is an Abnormal Immune Response.
What causes SJS?
An allergic reaction to Anti-infectives.
What color is SJS?
Reddish-purple rash.
What type of rash is associated with SJS?
A Reddish-purple rash that causes upper layers of skin to die off.
Is Steven-Johnson Syndrome Rare?
Yes
What are the symptoms of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?
Swelling of tongue, face, pain, sloughing of skin, blisters in mouth, nose, eyes
What occurs prior to SJS rash?
May have fever, sore throat, cough, pain in eyes.
What is the recovery of SJS?
Medical emergency; recovery can take months and may require skin grafting
How do you solve SJS?
~Take the patient off the medication
~Fluid intake
~Incubate the patient
~Glucocorticoids
~Maintain Body Temp.
What are the risks for Steven Johnson Syndrome?
~NSAIDs
* Penicillins, sulfonamides
* Allopurinol
* Anticonvulsants
* Recurrence is often more severe * Report s/s to physician
What is a Superinfection?
An infection occurring during antimicrobial treatment for another infection.
Superinfection
A secondary microbial infection that occurs in addition to an earlier primary infection, often because of weakening of the patients immune system function by the first infection.
What is TENs?
This is Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis. Same outcome and result of SJS.
