Best way to clear fouled plugs in run up?
Throttle 2200 (fullish) to run air through
Lean mixture - slowly rotate out to starve fuel
Wait 15-20 seconds (blows carbon off plugs)
*more common in older engines / 152s
How many spark plugs?
4 cylinders
2 spark plugs per cylinder
= 8 spark plugs
Cold engine start
3 shots prime (fuel to cylinders)
Warm engine start
1/2 shot prime and one throttle pump
Flooded engine start
Mixture - idle cut off
Full power throttle
(This pushes excess fuel out exhaust)
Crank!
When fuel / air ratio balanced and engine begins firing, mixture rich and pull throttle back to idle
*caused by overpriming or after successive start attempts in cold weather

Who am I calling?
Who am I? (Call sign)
Where am I?
What information do I have?
What do I want?
At KTTD: Non-movement areas? Movement areas?
movement (no tower clearance necessary): ramp and run up area / boundary road
Non- Movement areas (need tower clearance): taxiway / runway
Altitude limitations heading south of KTTD?
At or below 1200 until outside D ring (3 miles / blue dash line)
At or below 1700’ (pdx class c shelf floor)
Altitude limitations heading north of KTTD?
1500’ until past Lacamas lake
Lacamas lake to BTG (Class c shelf floor at 2000’)
LGS steady red
Continué circling at 1200’ abeam tower, just outside pattern
LGS flashing red
Unsafe to land - go to a different airport
No radio landing procedure
Squawk 7600
Use cell to call tower
Turn on all lights
Stay at 1200’ outside pattern and circle abeam tower
Watch for LGS
Green- clear to land
Rock wings to acknowledge
No flaps landing
Solo maneuvers
T/O and L
go-arounds
ground reference maneuvers
slips and crabs
High risk maneuvers
Stalls and emergency procedures
Side slip
Banked wing- dip into crosswind
Opposite Rudder keeps nose on centerline
Ball NOT centered
Forward slip
Aggressive side slip
Lose altitude
Creates drag and sinks
Light and variable winds (knts?)
Below 5 knots
Crab
Wings level
Rudder to point nose into wind
Ball centered
Ground reference maneuvers
Circle about a point
S-turns
Rectangle
How high to be above airport pattern when I intend to visit and want to check it out?
1000’ above the pattern altitude
7600
Lost radio
7700

Heading to get back to KTTD from south practice area?
330 (mt st Helens)
Heading to get back to Kttd from north practice area?
120
Fuel grade for my plane? Capacity?
100 low lead / 40gallons
Oil grade? Capacity?
50 weight aero shell / 8qts
Issue in flight and need to land at grove, but not signed off, what do I do?
Fly over and check it out. I Can land anywhere if I have a problem in flight.
Discharge on ammeter. What do you do?
Check alt / alt field circuit breaker
Turn off master
Turn off lights / unnecessarily electric
Toggle alt (left side of master) on and off
If alt reboots ammeter shows +
If shows flicker (-) must do a no flap / no radio landing
Flap malfunction. What do you do?
Land asap without flaps
3 Fs of Engine out procedure
Fly (best glide 75)
Field (choose a suitable field based on wind and distance)
Flow (landing checklist)
Airspeed indicator malfunction. What do you do?
Takeoff- horizon on the dash (80)
Cruise- power setting
Landing- watch VSI, use eyes, ears, butt to feel pitch and use familiar power settings
Tower says “make short approach”. What do you do?
Comfortable? Do it. Drop power on downwind and flap 10/20/30
Uncomfortable? “Unable” and they will extend my downwind
Tower is rushing you to exit runway and you landed long. What do you do?
Unable
Go-Around
POWER!
Carb heat off
Control pitch- horizon on dash
Flaps up slowly
*sloppy approach (too high or too fast) / someone on the runway
destination airport is too busy and chaotic. What do you do?
Stay out of pattern
Maneuvers in practice area
Listen to radio and assess intentions
Go somewhere else
Flight performance - how do temp and elevation affect it?
👆temp and 👆elevation = reduced performance (longer takeoff and reduced climb rate)
Takeoff distance (sea level / standard temp)
400-800’ depending on wind / weight
Landing distance (sea level / standard temp)
520’
Airport runway lengths for:
KTTD
KSPB
4S9
KTTD 5400
Skappoose 5100
Mulino 3400
Landed and no call from tower. What do you do?
Cross the line
Complete checklist
Call tower for taxi clearance
