Define stereotype
oversimplified and generalised set of ideas that we have about others
Define judgements
opinions we have of others and/or their behaviours often based on stereotypes
Define media
means of communication, e.g. television, radio, internet and newspapers
Define role model
someone a child looks up to and is likely to copy
Define prejudice
rigid set of attitudes and beliefs towards particular groups of people. these attitudes are usually negative but not always
Define discrimination
the way an individual behaves towards another person or group as a result of a prejudice they hold against them. this behaviour is generally negative but it can be positive
Define authoritarian personality
a type of personality that is prone to being prejudiced
What are 6 characteristics of an authoritarian personality?
- disliking of Jews
- resistant to change
- holds traditional values and beliefs

- being obedient to those in authority
- looking down on people of a lower status

technique used by Aronson to reduce prejudice within a group of mixed race students
Define expert method
another name for the jigsaw method but each member of the group becomes an expert on a particular topic and then passes on their knowledge to the rest of the group

seeing, speaking or writing to someone
Define empathy
being able to put yourself in someone else’s position psychologically and understand how that person is feeling
