Stereotyping & Biases Flashcards
What is bias?
Bias is an inclination or prejudice for or against something or someone, often in a way that’s considered unfair. It can be conscious or unconscious, affecting how we perceive and interact with others, make decisions, or interpret information. Biases can stem from personal experiences, cultural conditioning, or societal influences.
Name 4 types of biases
Confirmation bias, implicit bias, affinity bias, halo bias.
What is confirmation bias?
Tendency to search for, interpret, or remember information in a way that confirms one’s pre-existing beliefs.
What is implicit bias?
Unconscious attitudes or stereotypes that influence our understanding and actions without us even realizing
What is affinity bias?
Is favoring people who are like ourselves in appearance, background, or beliefs
What is the halo effect?
When one positive trait influences the overall perception of a person or things, often leading to biased judgment.
What is sterotyping?
Stereotyping involves applying generalized beliefs or assumptions to an individual based on their membership in a particular group. Stereotypes can be positive, negative, or neutral, but they oversimplify reality and fail to account for individual differences.
Name 3 common stereotypes:
Gender, racial, age stereotypes.
What is the relationship between bias and stereotyping?
Stereotyping can lead to biases. For example, if someone holds a stereotype that a particular ethnic group is less intelligent, this belief might unconsciously bias their judgment in hiring decisions, even if the stereotype isn’t true.
