Define social categorisation.
The process of grouping people based on shared social characteristics.
Why do we use social categorisation?
Social categorisation is used to make sense of a complex social environment; to allow us to predict others.

YES-because we are cognitive misers, and we use it so often in youth it becomes automatic.
NO-because Macrae et al showed that we only use social categories when its relevant to a task (goal dependent).
