  • Male stereotype pressures could lead to sexual assault as they feel the need to live up to their ‘lad’ title

What are examples of race stereotypes being used for comedic value in television/film?

A

Bend it Like Beckham - British film around an indian family, comedic, parody show, they play up to their own indian stereotypes and lesbian stereotypes following the idea that a female football player MUST be a lesbian

Friday Night dinner - British TV show around a jewish family, comedic, parody show, they play up to their own stereotypes

Neither of these are made with negative connotations, they are not done to make fun or criticise but rather celebrate and educate the culture through extreme representation

A
  • Dope - Film about very intelligent black boy who is trying to get into harvard and also accidentally finds himself selling drugs. “Would you ask me why i wanted to get into harvard if i was white?” - Power sentence putting into the audiences minds that we all automatically assume that everyone fits into their stereotypes

A
  1. Naturalisation -Differences are made to seem natural
  2. Exclusion - Binary oppositions
  3. Power - drawing light on inequalities, and deciding that that is there identity because we have that power to decide that
  4. Fantasy - Things that are implied but not shown, deeper meaning, why they are different and how they are different
  5. Fetishism - objectification, belittling people to their differences that we have decided their identity is for personal attraction
