How are the ABCs helpful?
they help us understand where stereotypes come from and how they influence behavior
Occurrence of Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination?
- often co-occur but not always
- if they co-occur, they tend to be initiated by the one before
- prejudice emerges from stereotyping, discrimination emerges from prejudice
stereotype definition
a generalization about a group of people in which identical characteristics are assigned to virtually all members of the group (regardless of actual variation among the members)
further explanation of stereotypes
- there’s a cognitive component (they’re based on what people think)
- have a valence ( a +/- pull to some sort of judgment)
- NOT necessarily negative
- can be inaccurate, accurate, or partially accurate
- tend to be overgeneralizations (not accurate for everyone, denies individuality
