Stereoisomers Flashcards
Cis
Compounds around double bond that are the same and on same side
Trans
Compounds around Double bond with that are the same but on opposite sides
Chiral molecules
Compound contains at least one chiral center
Achiral
2 mirror images forms are superimpossible
Has a plane of symmetry
Chiral center
Carbon with 4 different atoms or compounds attached to it (asymmetric center)
Enantiomers
Differ at all chiral centers
Cahn ingold prelog rules
- Rank substituents at chirality Centers according to atomic number
- Orient molecule so lowest ranked substituent points away from u
R
Clockwise order of ranking
S
Counterclockwise order of ranking
Two groups have same atom when figuring out absolute configuration
Move out to another bond attached to it and compare atomic numbers of those numbers
How many stereoisomers
2^n
n= chiral centers
Diastereoisomers
Differ to at least 1 or more chiral centers but not all (must have at least 2 chiral centers)
Meso
Have a plane of symmetry and could or couldn’t have chiral centers
Racemic mixtures
Containing equal amounts of Enantiomers which is optically inactive
Optically active
Not meso and not racemic
