Stereoisomerism Flashcards
Stereoisomerism
Have the same structural formula but a different arrangement of atoms in space
Why E/Z isomerism occurs in alkenes
No rotation around the C=C double bond
Thus, have to have diff arrangement for isomerism
E/Z isomerism
stereoisomerism around the double bond arises as rotation about double bond is restricted
groups attached to each C is fixed relative to each other
Conditions for E/Z isomerism
=> a C=C double
=> Diff group attached to each carbon atom of the double atom
Cis - Trans (a type of E/Z isomerism) Isomerism
=> a C=C double bond
=> Diff. groups attached to each C atom of the double bond
=> Each C in double bond has a H bonded to it
Z isomerism
If the group of higher priority are on the same side of double bond
E isomerism
If groups of higher priority are diagonal
E
Entengen = Opposite
REMEMBER Epposite
Z
Zusamen = Same side
REMEMBER Zame Zide
Assigning Priority
The higher the atomic (proton) number of what’s bonded to the double bonded C
=> the higher the priority
