Stereochemistry Flashcards
Achiral
Symmetric and super imposable
Chiral
Asymmetric; has 4 diff. substituents, non super imposable
Stereo isomers
Same formula, same connectivity
Constitutional isomers
Same formula, different bond connectivity
Stereo center
The center atom that has atoms connected to it (usually C with 4 atoms)
Enantiomers
Mirror image, non super imposable, no internal plane of symmetry; all chiral centers changed configuration when comparing to one stereo isomer
Disasterisomer
Same formula, different connectivity; non super imposable but not mirror images; only one chiral center changed, not all when comparing to another stereo isomer
Meso compounds
Two stereo centers; has an internal plane of symmetry and a symmetry point; achiral
How do you know how many stereoisomers does a molecule have?
of stereoisomers = 2^n
n = number of stereo centers
Cis
A stereoisomer where two of the same atoms/molecules are on the same side
Trans
A stereoisomer where there are two of the same atoms/molecules on different sides
Are meso compounds identical?
Yes
What do you call two molecules that are symmetrical, mirror images and all their chiral centers are different from one another?
Meso compounds
What do you call two molecules that are asymmetric, mirror images, and all of their chiral centers are different from one another?
Enantiomers
Are all diastereoisomers cis and trans?
No
