Autonomy Step 2. Halibut Treaty

A

Halibut Treaty (1923)- There was an issue of halibut stocks being endangered. Canada had to sign a treaty about conserving fish stocks. During this time, Britain was a co-signers in Canadian treaty negotiations. However, King said that Canada can sign the treaty on their own.

Autonomy Step 3. King-Byng Crisis

A

King-Byng Crisis (1926)- When Mackenzie Achieved a weak minority, he asked to dissolve the parliament but Julian Byng refused, leading to Mackenzie resigning. Instead of Julian letting the PRIME MINISTER decide, he went on to ask the Conservatives to form their own government but this is a bad decision as Mackenzie is a big step to Canada’s Autonomy.

Balfour report/imperial conference (1926) - The Balfour Report recognized the growing political and economic autonomy of former Colonies. This ensured our complete independence.

A

Statue of Westminster (1931) - When the British parliament officially recognized the equality of Britain and its colonies. This was also called the Canada’s Declaration of Independence by Norman Hillmer.
