what is done at trendelenburg sign?
Ask the patient to stand on the affected leg
what would be a positive response ?
pelvis drops on the opposite side
What does the trendelenburg sign assess
integrity of the abductor of the hips, gluteus minimus and medius.
what does the sciatic stretch test include?
ask the patient to sit on the edge of the couch.
then ask them to perform a straight leg raise
The assessor must take the weight of the limb and increase dorsiflexion (pushed up).
Assess for discomfort or pain
what does the sciatic stretch test, test for?
nerve root entrapment or potential prolapsed disc
how is the patella reflex test done ?
Ask the patient to sit on the edge of the couch and use a reflex hammer and gently strike the patella tendon.
what will a positive sign be?
no reflex
what is the achilles reflex test?
tap the achilles tendon with a reflex hammer while the foot is dorsiflexion
when would the Achilles reflex be absent? or reduced?
disk herniation at L5 - S1
reduction can be peripheral neuropathy
how is the planter reflex done?
using the opposite end of the reflex hammer draw and S shape on the sole of the foot.
toes should curl downwards
what does it mean if the toes spread upwards?
Babinski response which can be due to disease of spinal cord, and brain in adults.
