step 5 Flashcards
What cranial nerve do we assess at step 5 ?
(II) Optic
What do we assess as part of assessing the optic nerve
- Inspection of pupils
- Accommodation reflex
- Visual acuity
- Visual inattention
We start by inspecting pupils but what for?
Size
alignment
independent reaction
How / what are we assessing for when assessing the accommodation reflex and what should we see?
Assessing construction and convergence.
Ask the patient to look at a point in the distance, then move the pen torch close tot the noes and ask the patient to focus on pen torch.
- should see pupil constriction
what/ how are we assessing visual acuity ?
Ask if the patient wears glasses
Now want to test a patients eye sight using a sellen’s chart from around 6 meters away.
- Ask the patient to cover one eye with the palm of their hand and read the letters on the chart and then repeat with the other eye.
This test is looking for consistency.
- If the patient is unable to read from 6M move to 3m then 1m.
What does visual inattention test and how do we do it?
tests peripheral vision inattention
sit square from the patient around 1M from them.
Ask the patient to look into your eyes and raise your hands wiggling fingers and ask the patient which side.
Then need to repeat the test however you and the patient need to cover and eye and move your hands in and get them to say now when they can see it.
