Stem Cells and Genetic Engineering Flashcards
What feature of stem cells allows them to produce any type of cell?
They are unspecialised.
What are the two types of stem cells?
Embryonic and Adult/Tissue.
What is an ethical issue surrounding the use of stem cells in science?
Embryonic stem cells are destroyed in the process, some people believe this is destroying a potential life.
What is genetic engineering?
Genetic engineering is the addition of DNA from one species into another to produce new proteins.
Which part of a bacterial cell is used in genetic engineering?
The plasmid.
What section of a chromosome is removed during genetic engineering?
The gene.
What is required to remove a gene from a chromosome and seal it into a plasmid?
Enzymes.
After an amended plasmid is inserted into a bacterial cell, what happens next?
The bacterial cells replicate the plasmid and pass it into their offspring, making copies of the DNA it contains.
Name two hormones that can be genetically engineered.
Insulin and Human Growth Hormone.
