stem cells Flashcards
stem cells are unspecialised cells that can
reproduce themselves by mitosis and remain undifferentiated
or
differentiate into specialised cells when required to do so
embryonic stem cells are unspecialised cells from a
human blastocyst
all the genes in an embryonic stem cells have the capability of
differentiating into all cell types of the human body
embryonic stem cells are described as
pluripotent
embryonic stem cells can be formed by
transferring cells from a pre implantation stage embryo into a plastic laboratory culture dish
tissue (adult) stem cells are found in
skin and red bone marrow
they have a lower differentiation potential than embryonic stem cells because
many of their genes have already been switched off during development
the primary role of tissue stem cells is
to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found
tissue cells in red bone marrow give rise to
red blood cells, phagocytes, lymphocytes and platelets
tissue stem cells are described as
multipotent
