Features of Hertzsprung-Russel diagram
A
- Luminosities in terms of that of sun
- Most stars fall within diagonal strip called main sequence
- Top right: red giants and super giants
- Bottom left: white dwarfs

5
Q
Cepheid variable stars
A
Stars whose luminosity varies periodically between a minimum and a maximum
6
Q
Outline cycle of cepheid variables:
A
- Helium atoms ionised by radiation
- Free electrons collide, heating star
- Causes pressure increase; star expands
- Radiation leaves once most helium is ionised
- Star cools and contracts under its weight
- Helium nuclei recombine with electrons
- Process repeats
