Steering Flashcards
What are the 2 sources of power for E-steering?
L/C 91 alt 4E board
What are the 4 locations to steer the ship from?
Sec con in DCC
Bridge
E-Steering
Trick wheels/locally
How do you engage the trick wheel?
Pull the pin then pull the trick wheel out and replace the pin
For both local and remote you must engage the switch
What are the numerical identifiers for the port and stbd pumps?
Port 2 and 4
Stbd 1 and 3
Where are the pumps located?
On top of 2 hydraulic tanks
What are the two sources of power and alt power? (Port and stbd)
62 port
63 stbd
Alt 4E board
Rams move the ________ which is connected to the ________.
Cross head
Rudder
What is the steering angle of the cross head?
35 degrees
What happens at 36 and 37 degrees?
36 - the copper crush ring will be crushed
37 - it will engage the steel stop ring
What are the wrenches used for?
Used to 0 out steering and locking the cross head
If all else fails what can be used to steer the ship?
The screws (propellers)
How far are the rudders able to be off at any time? What is the risk of them being farther apart?
3 degrees
Pressure being created and forcing the rudders apart
What does the servo box do?
Turns mechanical signal into electrical signal
What is the purpose of the servo box? (Helm)
Tells the helm the position of the rudder through the differential box
What are the purpose of the 3 servos?
2 receive signal from rudders
1 send signal to bridge
What does the steering control disconnect box do?
Controls the available power from the ABT /breaker/motor controller
When switched into emergency run what happens?
By passes all electrical safeties and supplies power to the HPU (Hydraulic power unit)
What are the tanks and their capacities in the Hydraulic Power Unit? (HPU)
Static tank head - 25 gal (maintains constant pressure to the system
Emergency steering tank - 25 gal
Sump tank - 240-280 gal
Storage/Cooling tank - 280 gal
An electric motor with 2 __________ that feed 2 _________
Drive shafts
Pumps
How many HPU run on each side normally? What can happen in an emergency?
1 HPU on normal
All 4 can be ran if needed
2 pumps are connected by what? And what does it feed?
The hydraulic transfer assembly
It feeds the manifold that creates pressure in rams (2 rams per side)
What is lead and lag?
Pushing and or pulling of hydraulic fluid
When are rudder swing checks done during a restricted maneuvering doctrine?
24 hrs before RMD
When do we go into RMD?
Pulling in, along side, and forming up
What are the hazards of working in aft steering?
Slipping, hearing, sight, hydraulic fluid
