the role of parliament
it debates proposed legislation, passes or rejects it, and amends legislation.
what is statute law
statute law is the law made by parliament. aka ‘legislation’ or ‘acts of parliament’. any parliament has the power to make statute law. state, territory and federal government all have the right to make laws.
the structure of parliament
a parliament is a body of elected representatives.
all state parliaments (apart from Queensland and the territories) and the federal parliament are bicameral. they have an upper house and a lower house.
lower house- legislative assembly
upper house- legislative council
in federal parliament, two houses are the senate (upper) and the house of reps (lower).
