Stats Module 1 Vocab Flashcards
Variable
Characteristic of the individual to be measured
Quantitative Variable
Has a numerical measurement for which addition or average makes sense
Qualitative Variable
Describes an individual by placing them into a category
Random Sample
A collection of n individuals from a population, where each individual has an equal opportunity to be selected
Nominal Level of Measurement
Applies to data that consists of names, labels, or categories
Ordinal Level of Measurement
Applies to data that can be arranged in order. The order cannot be meaningless
Observational Study
Measurements of individuals are conducted in such a way that does not change the response or variable being measured
Cluster Sample
Selecting a sample based on location
Experimental Study
A treatment is deliberately imposed on individuals in order to observe a possible change in response of the variable being tested
Systematic Sampling
A sample wherever nth individual is selected
Statistic
A numerical measure that describes an aspect of a sample
Parameter
Measurement of a population
Confounding Variable
A variable where no data is collected but affects the outcome of an experiment
Sampling Error
The difference between measurements of the sample and the corresponding measurement of the population
Stratified Sampling
Sampling drawn based on a characteristic or trait
