Stats Lakin Flashcards
What are the 3 branches of statistics?
1) Data Collection
2) Descriptive Statistics
3) Inferential Statistics
What branch of statistics is concerned with the fairness and representativeness of the sample of the population?
Data Collection
What is the branch of statistics ‘Data Collection’ concerned with?
The collection, fairness and representativeness of the sample of the population?
What branch of statistics is concerned with presenting the data we have, in an understandable way?
Descriptive Statistics
What is the branch of statistics ‘Descriptive Statistics’ concerned with?
Presenting the data we have, in an understandable way; usually visually (graphs and charts) or numerically (averages etc)
What branch of statistics is concerned with deriving conclusions and testing hypotheses?
Inferential Statistics
What is the branch of statistics ‘Inferential Statistics’ concerned with?
Making conclusions about the data, “What is this data telling us, and what should we do?”
What are the two distinct types of data in statistics?
1) Discrete data; distinct values, clearly identified and separated. (roll of a die etc)
2) Continuous data; Can take any value. e,g, speed of a car which can be any value depending only on the accuracy of the measurement.
What sort of data is discrete?
distinct values, clearly identified and separated. (roll of a die etc)
What sort of data is continuous?
Continuous data can take any value. e,g, speed of a car which can be any value depending only on the accuracy of the measurement.
What sort of data is a series of temperature measurements
Continuous
What sort of data is whole numbers between 1 and 100
Discrete
