stats chapter 1 Flashcards
Descriptive Statistics
organizing and summarizing data
inferential statistics
formal methods to drawing conclusions from data
probability
a mathematical tool used to study randomness
population
whole group, group I want to know about, parameter is fixed
variable
a characteristic or measurement that can be determined for each member of a population (x or y or z), numerical or categorical
data
actual values of the variable, datum
qualitative data
the result of categorizing or describing attributes of a population
ex: hair color, eye color, type of car
quantitative data
always numerical from counting or measuring
quantitative discrete data
a variable that can only take specific numeric values
ex: number of needle punctures
quantitative continuous data
data involving numbers that could change over time
ex: height or temperature
sampling
a sample should have the same characteristics as the population its representing
simple random sample
a type of probability sampling where the researcher randomly selects a subset of participants from a population
ex: names of 25 employees being chosen from a hat with 150 employees names
convince sample
drawing from a population that is close at hand or convenient. it is a non probability type of sample
stratified sample
researchers divide subjects into subgroups based on characteristics they share, once divided each subgroup is randomly sampled using another probability sampling method.
cluster sample
When researchers divide population into small clusters and then randomly select some of the samples as they go
