Stats Before Midterm Flashcards
Learn
Descriptive Statistics
Use numerical and/or graphical methods to explore data ie, to look for patterns in the data set, to summarize the information revealed in the data set, and to present the information in a convenient form.
Inferential Statistics
utilizes sample data to make estimates, decisions, predictions, or other generalizations about a larger set of data
Statistics
The science that deals with collection, classification, analysis, and interpretation of information or data
Quantitative data
Are measurements that are recorded on a naturally occurring numerical scale
Qualitative data
cannot be measured on a numerical scale; they can only be classified into categories
Population
Is a set of units (usually people, objects, transactions, or events) of interest to a study.
Variable
Is a characteristic or property of an individual experiment unit
Sample
Is a subset of units of a population
Statistical Inference
An estimate or prediction or some other generalization about a population based on information contained in sample
Measure of Reliability
A measure of reliability is a statement about the degree of uncertainty associated with statistical inference
Two Methods to Describe Data
Graphical and Numerical
Nominal
Just a name (Qualitative)
Class
One of the categories into which qualitative data can be classified
Class frequency
The number of observations in the data set falling into a particular class
