Stats Flashcards
Statistics
The study of variability
Variability
How things differ, differences
2 branches of AP STATS
Inferential and descriptive
Descriptive stats
Describing the data collected by using summaries or pictures
Inferential stats
Using your data to look at the big picture (population)
Compare descriptive and inferential
Descriptive tells you what kind of data you have and inferential is is data is
Data
Any collected information
Population
The group you’re interested in
Sample
A subset of the population, taken to make inferences of the population
Compare populations to sample
Populations are large and samples most of the time come from populations but smaller
Compare data to statistics
Data is the information collected from different subjects and statistic is data from each subject
Parameter
A numerical summary of a population
Cenus
Like a sample of the entire population, getting a sample from each population
Does a cenus make sense
Can’t get get a cenus from a large population
Count 9 pickles in a hamburger what are the 9 pickles called
Datum or data value
If I count pickles on a bunch of hamburgers an the average is 9.5.. what are the pickles called
Statistic
The true average number in data
Parameter
Difference between a sample and cenus
Sample is data from a small population and a cenus is data from larger population’s
Difference between discrete and continuous variables
Like cards sold and weight of a mouse
Frequency
How often something comes up
Frequency distribution
Table or chart that show how often values occur in a data set
Relative frequency
The percent of time something comes up ( frequency/total)
Cumulative frequency
Adding up the frequency as you go
