Population
The whole set of items that are of interest
Census
Measures or observes every member of a population
Sample
A selection of observations taken from the population
Sampling units
Individual units of a population
Simple random sampling
Every sample has an equal chance of being chosen. Randomly chosen
Sysematic sampling
The samples are chosen at regular intervals of eachother
Stratified sampling
The population is divided into mutually exclusive strata and random sample is chosen from each
Quota sampling
A researcher selects a sample that reflects the characteristics of the whole population
Opportunity sampling
Taking the sample from people who are available at the time of the study and who fit the criteria
Quantitative data
Data with numerical observations
Qualitative data
Data with non-numerical observations
Continuous variable
A variable that can take any value in a given range
Discrete variable
A variable that can only take specific values in a given range
