Statisticsl Testing Flashcards
What’s a statistical test?
A way of determining whether hypotheses should be rejected or accepted
When is a sign test used?
When a study:
Looked for a difference not an association
Uses a RM design
Collects nominal data
How is a sign test conducted?
1) state the hypothesis, including both the alternative and null hypothesis
2) record data and work out the sign e.g. the sign will be negative if the value has decreased in the second condition, but positive if it has increased. If the value has stayed the same, this value will be ignored and n adjusted to exclude it
3) find the calculator to value for the sign test which is the number of times the less frequent sign occurs.
4) find the critical value of S-use the calculator in value (which is the total number of values with death note, value excluded), and p is greater than or equal to 0.05, which means less than 5% probability that the results occurred by chance.
5) state the conclusion whereby refer back to the hypothesis mentioning that IV and DV and support your conclusion of the site. Values of the critical value S N and P values you used.
What’s the type one error?
When the no hypothesis is rejected, when it’s actually true (a false positive)
What’s the type two error?
Failure to reject, null hypothesis that is false (a false negative)
