Statistics Vocabulary Flashcards
numbers that characterize a data set
statistics
the sum of the values in the set divided by the number total ( average)
mean
is the middle value in a set when the values are arranged in numerical order
median ( Q2)
is the difference between the greatest and the least data values ( max-min)
range
values that divide a data set into four equal parts ( 25)
quartiles
the median of the lower half
1st quartile ( Q1)
the median of the upper half of the set
3rd quartile (Q3)
the difference between the 3rd and 1st quartile
Interquartile range ( IQR)
the average of the distance between the individual data values and the mean
Standard Deviation ( o )
a data representation that uses a number line and x’s , dots, or other symbols to show frequency
dot plot ( line plot)
is a value in a data set that is much greater or much less than most of the other values in the data set
outlier
a bar graph that is used to display the frequency of data divided into equal intervals
histogram
a collection of paired variable values
two-variable data
a graph of points with one variable plotted along each axis
scatter plot
is a measure of the strength and direction of the relationship between 2 variables
correlation
a way to quantify the correlation of a data set ( -1 to 1)
correlation coefficient (r)
used to show how values in a set are distributed
box plot
bell shaped
normal distribution
a line through a set of two-variable data that illustrates the correlation
line of fit
methods of prediction data values for one variable from another based on a line of fit
Interpolation ( inside) & Extrapolation ( outside)
the line that comes closet to all points in the data set
line of best fit
a method for finding the equation for the line of best fit
linear regression
make distorted in a way that is regarded as inaccurate
skew
