Statistics 2 Flashcards
What is central tendency?
A typical score around which the other scores are scattered
Another term for ‘normal distribution’
Symmetrical distribution
Another term for ‘skewed distribution’
Asymmetrical distribution
What are the 3 types of central tendency?
Skewed left (tail) = negative Skewed right (tail) = positive Symmetric
What are the 3 measures of central tendency?
Mean (average)
Median (middle number)
Mode (most frequent)
When should you not use the mean?
If influenced by outliers.
Use the median instead
What is the best measure of central tendency for NOMINAL data?
Mode
What is the best measure of central tendency for ORDINAL data?
Median
What is the best measure of central tendency for INTERVAL SYMMETRIC data?
Mean
What is the best measure of central tendency for INTERVAL ASYMMETRIC data?
Median
Considering Shapiro-Wilk a sig. figure of >0.05 is the data normally distributed or skewed?
Normally distributed
How do you calculate the interquartile range?
Q3 - Q1
Should you use a boxplot for mean, SD, median and IQR for a small or large sample size?
Small sample size;
Mean & SD = normal distribution
Median & IQR = NON-normal distribution
What is variance?
How widely the scores are
dispersed around the mean.
Near the mean = small variation
Far from the mean = large variation
What is used to describe dispersion?
Range (= largest - smallest value)
Variance (= sum of the squared distance, of each score away from the mean)
SD (= positive sq root of the variance)
