Statistics Flashcards
If a set has n terms and n is even, the median is
The average of n/2 and (n+1)/2
Range
Highest number in the set - lowest number
If we add or subtract the same amount to or from each term in a data set, what happens to the standard deviation?
It does not change but the average does
If we multiple or divide the elements in a set by a constant amount, what happens to the SD?
Will also be multiplied by that amount
How to lower the SD of a set
Add numbers to the set that are equal to the mean
To compare the standard deviation among data sets that have an equal number of data points
1.) determine the mean of each
2.) for each set, determine the absolute difference between the mean of that set and each data point
3.) sum the differences obtained in b
The set with the greater sum has the greater SD
If we are given that either the largest or the smallest value in a data set is equal to the mean
All the data points in the set are the same, SD equals 0
How to calculate the number of even numbers in a set
(Highest # - lowest #)/2 + 1
If measurement m increases by a factor of f then
New measurement is Mf if f>=1
New measurement is M + Mf if f<1
If measurement is decreased by a factor of f then
New measurement is M/f if f>=1
New measurement is M-Mf if f<1
