Statistics Flashcards
What is an independent variable?
The properties that we manipulate
What are dependent variables?
The data that change in response to the independent variables
What is central tendency?
Where the variable is usually found
Best understood measure is the arithmetic mean.
What is variability?
Likelihood of occurrence
What is the sample mean?
Estimates the actual population mean, - average value
How do you calculate the mean?
Sum of x values/ sample number
How do you calculate variance?
Sum of squares/ sample number -1
What is standard deviation?
Measures variation of the sample (is the square root of variance)
What is the standard error?
The standard deviation divided by the square root of the sample size
What is a null hypothesis?
There is no effect of X on Y
What is the alternative hypothesis?
There is an effect of X on Y
What does it mean if P value is larger or smaller than alpha.
P > alpha = accept null hypothesis
P < alpha = reject null hypothesis
What is ANOVA?
Analysis of variance. Determines wether samples are significantly different by using a variance ratio test (the F test).
In ANOVA what types of data are the independent and dependent variables?
Independent = categorical
Dependent = Continuous
What is the figure type in an ANOVA test?
Bar graph
