Statistical Power Flashcards
1
Q
What is a statistical power?
A
the probability that a statistical test will reject a false null hypothesis (probability of detecting an effect if an effect exists)
2
Q
What is a type 1 error?
A
a false positive- reject null hypothesis when it should’ve been accepted
3
Q
What is a type 2 error?
A
a false negative- accepted the null hypothesis when it should’ve been rejected
4
Q
what happens when statistical power is high?
A
probability of making a type 2 error is low
5
Q
what is power dependent upon?
A
- sample size
- alpha level
- effect size
6
Q
When should power analysis be conducted?
A
at the earliest stages of a study to guide the study design
7
Q
What should you do to conduct a power analysis?
A
- be clear about your research question
- know what statistical tests you need to perform
- be clear on your alpha level
