Stationary Wave Resonance Flashcards
Define natural frequency
All objects have their own specific frequency which they naturally oscillate without being forced
Define forced oscillation
Oscillation that occurs in an object when an external source applies a driving force to the object
Define resonance
The storing energy in an oscillation or stationary wave
Energy coming from external source is matched or close to the natural frequency of object
How does a fundamental harmonic occur (String under tension)
When string vibrates forming half a wavelength w nodes at each end
Strings : how to know the number harmonic
No. of anti node
What does an open tube have at both ends?
Antinodes
What can open tubes act as?
Resonators
Basis of all wind instruments
Open tube : how to know the number harmonic
No. of nodes
Open tube - what is the fundamental harmonic?
1/2 wavelength
What does closed tube have at its ends?
Closed end = node
Open end = antinode
Closed tube : why is one end open?
Let out sound
Closed tube : what is the fundamental harmonic?
1/4 wavelength
