“The purpose of this procedure is to examine the health of the peripheral retina in the back of your eye”
*ask which eye
BIO
- “I’m examining the __ peripheral retina. The tissue is intact with no holes, tears or pathology”
- “I am examining the posterior pole, including the optic nerve and macula. The retinal tissue is intact, with no holes or tears”
Dilated fundoscopy
“The purpose of this procedure is to examine the structures inside your eye”
Lens
- “the anterior capsule is clear with no signs of opacities”
- cortex, nucleus, posterior capsule
- retro: “I’m examining the lens with retroillumination. It shows a clear lens/cortical spoking/vacuoles/PSC”
- “there are no signs of cataracts or opacities in the lens”
Anterior vitreous
- have them look up, down, then straight at me
- “the retrolental area is clear. The anterior vitreous is clear/shows syneresis/condensation/no cells”
Posterior vitreous
-“I’m examining the posterior vitreous. It is clear with no cells or signs of PVD”
Optic nerve
-“It’s a healthy pink color, the rim tissue is healthy, and the disc margins are distinct. The contour is deep/shallow. There is no elevation or edema. There is/not peripapillary atrophy. The horizontal/vertical C/D ratio is __”
Arcades
-“I’m examining the __ arcades. They have normal course and caliber, no hemorrhages, exudates, or lesions”
Macula
-“I’m examining the fovea and macula. The macula is intact. There does not appear to be any elevation to the tissue. There is a bright/dim foveal light reflex”
*ask for a hypothetical finding and give one fact and one management strategy
