Station 3: Blood supply to the brain Flashcards
Where are the broca and wernicke areas?
Left hemisphere:
90% of right handed people
70% left handed people
What areas of the brain are effected in a middle cerebral artery stroke?
Motor cortex (head, neck, trunk, arm) Sensory cortex (head, neck, trunk, arm) Auditory cortex
If of the left MCA then also:
Broca’s area (expressive speech)
Wernicke’s area (receptive speech)
What areas of the brain are effected in a anterior cerebral artery stroke?
Motor cortex (lower limb) Sensory cortex (lower limb) Pre-frontal cortex (motivation/planning/organising/complex behaviour) Supplemental motor (dominant hemisphere) -> function with Broca's area to initiate speech
What areas of the brain are effected in a posterior cerebral artery stroke? Which cranial nerve can be effected?
Primary visual cortex
(occipital lobe)
PCA runs on the midbrain with oculomotor (CNIII) isolated palsy:
Left PCA infarct -> right homonymous hemianopia (CONTRALATERAL)
What areas of the brain are effected with a vertebral artery stroke?
Posterior inferior cerebellar artery -> cerebellar stroke, brainstem
DANISHP
DO WE NEED MORE THAN THIS
The FAST campaign is describing a stroke of which artery? Why?
Middle cerebral artery
What are the anatomical relations of Broca and Wernicke areas?
Broca is more anterior to Wernickes
