Static Eletricity Flashcards
What’s static electricity?
Static is a build up of charges at rest
What’s the current electricity?
The flow of charges in motion through a conductor
Why do you use the electrostatic series?
To know if the material is going to gain or lose electrons
What’s the three laws of static electricity?
Like same charges repel, opposite charges attract, neutral objects are attracted to charged objects
What’s three ways to charge an object
Friction rubbing two object together, contact charged object touches neutral object, induction a charged object comes close to a neutral object, but does not touch
Define the term electroscope
An electroscope is a special device that detects electric charge
List two different types of electro scopes
Pith ball and metal leaf
What’s an insulator?
Does not let electrons pass through it
What’s a conductor?
It lets electrons pass through it
What is charging by induction?
A charged object that’s brought near, but not touched to a neutral conducting object
What kind of charge does a proton have?
Positive charge
What kind of charge does an electron have?
A negative charge
What kind of charge does a neutron have?
It does not have a charge so it’s called neutral
Why are atoms neutral?
Because the number of protons and electrons are the same
What’s in the nucleus?
Positively charged protons and neutrons that have no charge
What happens when you rub two different materials together or bump them together?
The electrons from one surface leave and collect on the other one
What happens if electrons are lost?
Positive charge
What happens if you electrons are gained?
Negative charge
