Static Electricity Flashcards
What is the build up of static electricity caused by?
Friction
How does static electricity occur?
1) When certain insulating materials are rubbed together, negatively charged electrons will be scraped off and dumped on the other
2) This’ll leave a positive static charge on one and a negative static charge on the other
What determines which way the electrons are transferred?
The 2 materials involved
Describe the transfer of electrons when rubbing a polythene rod and a cloth duster
Electrons move from the duster to the rod. Duster is then +ve charged and rod is -ve charged
Describe the transfer of electrons when rubbing a Acetate rod and a cloth duster
Electrons move from the rod to the duster. Duster is then -ve charged and rod is +ve charged
The material that loses the [ ] loses some negative charge and is left with an equal [ ]
electrons
positive charge.
Only [ ] move - not the positive charge!
electrons
Two things with opposite electric charges…
are attracted to each other
Two things with the same electric charges…
will repel each other
The forces that make objects attract/repel each other get [ ] he further apart the two things are.
weaker
Electrical charges can move easily through [ ]
Conductors
What are known to be good conductors?
Metals
