Static Electricity Flashcards
How is an atom electrically neutral?
When it contains equal number of protons and electrons
What charge do electrons have?
Negative
What charge do protons have?
Positive
What causes an object to be negatively charged?
Gaining electrons
What causes an object to became positively charged?
Losing electrons
What is static electricity?
Imbalance between negative and positive charges in an object
Until when does the charge remain?
Until it is able to move away in means of electric current or discharge
What is a conductor
Material that allows electrons to flow freely through it
What is an electric current?
Flow of charged particles (electrons) moving through an electrical conductor
What is an insulator?
Material that resists the flow of electrons
When can electrons be transferred from one material to the other?
When 2 insulating materials come into close contact or rub together
Why can’t positive charges be transferred?
They are fixed in the nuclei of the atoms
What will two oppositely charged objects do?
Attract each other
What is an electrostatic force?
A non-contact force which pushes or pulls on objects without touching them
Two objects with the same charge will…..
Repel each other
