Static Electricity Flashcards
What does an atom consist of?
A central nucleus, electrons moving around it
What charge does an atom have?
No overall charge
Why does an atom have no overall charge?
Because it has the same number of positive and negative charges
What happens with electrons when two materials are rubbed together?
Electrons may be transferred from one material to the other.
What happens if an insulating material gains electrons?
The object will have a negative charge of static electricity.
What happens if an insulating material looses electrons?
The object has a positive charge.
Will a positively charged object attract or repel a negatively charged object?
They will attract
Will two objects with the same charge repel or attract eachother?
They will repel each other.
What is the space around a charged object where it will attract or repel other charged objects?
Its electric field
