static electricity Flashcards
electric force
attractive or repulsive force that electric charges exert on one another
electric field
region in which an electric charge experiences an electric force
electrical insulators
charged particles are not free to move about
charged by friction (contact made)
electrical conductor
charged particles are free to move about
charged by induction (not touching)
earthing/earth
can take or give negative charges while still remaining neutral
direction of an electric field
direction of the force that would act on a small positive charge
strength of electric field
indicated by how close the field lines are to one another
closer- stronger
hazards of electrostatic
lightning - thunderclouds become electrically charged due to friction between water molecules in the thundercloud and air particles in the atm, negatively charged underside of the clouds repels the electrons near the earth surface which becomes positively charged
electrostatic discharge - cause sparks and ignite flammable items thus they have metal chain that hangs close to the ground to provide earthing path
practical applications
photocopier
electrostatic precipitators
spray paint
