Q

How does lightning occur

A

Charge on ground is positive and charge in cloud is negative
Electrical field builds up between the two
Air is ionised
Electrons travel to the ground
Causing lighting

Q

Explain why transferring fuel can be dangerous and how the use of metal wires makes the
process much safer.

A

Friction as fuel flows through pipe causes a build up of electrostatic charge, (PD between nozzle and plane) which will cause a spark which may lead to a explosion

The use of the metal wire means that there is no PD between the two , so no fields are made and no imbalance of electrons
